Squirt Fountains in Austria, Terror in Hungary and Dracula’s Castle, Romania

Sunday, April 25th, 2010

Jessica says:

“Dear folks

We went to the trick fountains in Hellbrunn, Salzburg. It was so much fun! We all got squirted by water & me & AJ got apsolootly (absolutely) soked (soaked)!”

AJ says:

“I liked getting squirted with water.”

Jessica says:

“In Hungary, we visited Budapest and went to a huge Cathedral and Opera House where me and my brother took photographs. I am 56 years old on Brain Training now. Dad had a go and he is 71 - ha! ha!”.

AJ says:

“My first tooth fell out and then my second one fell out too! I feel like I am 6 years old now. I got some Hungarian money from the tooth fairy in Hungary and some Romanian money from the tooth fairy in Romania.”

Jessica says:

“Right now, we’re staying at a place called Vampire Camping in Bran, Romania and we met with our friends Lee, Helen and Beverley. A man took a photo of us and said he is going to put it on his website. We’ve been playing on the swing and having lots of fun. Today we are going to see Dracula’s castle.”

Lots of love

Jessica and AJ

Andrew and Anne say:

We made good progress through Austria and Hungary and are currently based in Bran, Romania.

Austria

Innsbruck in Austria was a perfect stop point for us en-route from Southern Germany. Our first real bout of hot sunny warm weather, excellent play park plus woods and goats right by the campsite on the outskirts of the city, all contributing to a nice relaxing time. The scenery of surrounding snow capped mountains adding the perfect finishing touches. AJ was a bit upset when it came time to leave and had a little cry as he’d befriended a lovely dog called Percy from North Wales that he didn’t want to leave (AJ loves dogs!). Luckily, Percy has promised to send an email once he reaches and settles in his new home in Lake Garda, Italy in a few weeks time.

We moved onto spending a little time on the outskirts of Salzburg, opting to avoid the city centre and the Sound of Music tours. We headed for a gang agreed steep ascent up the mountains to see Eisriesenwelt Hohle in Werfen - the world’s largest accessible Ice Caves. Unfortunately, we were two weeks too early and the caves were closed. So we activated the second half of our planned day to Lustschloss Hellbrunn in Salzburg to see Prince Archbishop Marcus Sitticus’ 17th Century trick/practical joke fountains and gardens. It was a great day as the weather was nice and hot and the children thoroughly enjoyed being squirted to death by the 400 year old statues and water spouts hidden everywhere. A relaxing picnic in beautiful weather and a long play in the park followed before an audio tour of Hellbrunn Palace to finish our day (and before the rain and cold weather caught up with us again!).

Before leaving Austria, we re-joined a continuation of the Romantic Road route that we had left on exiting Germany, to a stretch along the Danube River between Melk and Krems which we found very pretty, unspoiled and picturesque. We stayed just outside of Krems in a spot overlooking the Danube River in time to enjoy the last of the sunshine but looked like a family of tinkers with our bag load of freshly washed clothes drip drying & drapped all over the Land Rover (very versatile vehicle - not just for driving! - ahem!).

Hungary

Hungary suprised us on arrival with Tesco’s being our first major sighting, followed by Decathalon and several other major super stores along the first parts of our route. It wasn’t quite what we expected and almost felt like we were in the UK again. Hungary is a very modern country with an excellent road system and vignette (as per Austria) system as part of the motorway road tax pre-requisite.

We felt some small beginnings of the transition from Western to Eastern Europe beginning to set in. Outside of Budapest, there is an abundance of countryside which made us feel like we were back in Ireland years ago but inside the centre, we noticed begging and homelessness are everyday occurences, sitting comfortably alongside expensive department stores and the ‘those that have’. Budapest is breathtaking in terms it’s dramatically ornate and large historic buildings. The streets are very wide and long and almost French looking. We took time meandering and looking at the Opera House and the gold leaf covered interior of the very large central Cathedral nearby. The most prominent building for us was the Houses of Parliament which towers above and lines the Danube river rather majestically as we approached from Buda. Though things look very good in Budapest and there is loads to do, many buildings still have momentos of war torn damage and we gained a very small sense of what the Hungarians must have devastatingly gone through over the years.

A major happening was that AJ’s first tooth fell out bang in the middle of a bridge over the Danube between Buda and Pest. He was very excited about it and eagerly awaited the tooth fairy’s visit that same night. AJ couldn’t wait to get to bed that same evening (a first!) and the Hungarian tooth fairy didn’t disappoint, leaving some Forints under AJ’s pillow in time for the morning.

Rather than visit the beautiful parks and famous baths in Budapest (as good parents should!), we took the children to Terror Haza (House of Terror) - a museum which was witness to the two shameful and tragic periods in Hungary’s 20th Century history - serving first as the HQ for the Hungarian Nazis and then shortly after, the Secret Police. The visit was a little bit too advanced for the children but Jessica did very well and learned a little about Hungary’s history while AJ got confused between the Russians and Germans but, enjoyed exploring the underground cells at the end. McDonald’s followed before heading back to our campsite which was situated in an unusual, quaint and dis-used Tram Station car park in the foothills of the Buda hills.

We met two very nice couples on the campsite - an Australian couple with converted UK transit van who have already spent 7 months in the UK and are now touring (5 months) Europe before heading back to Australia, plus a German couple with Land Rover and Auto Camp roof tent, heading for the Ukraine.

Before leaving, we took a cable car up to the Buda (Janos) Hills to see views of the whole of Budapest and the Danube from a famous point called the Ersebet Look Out Tower. This caused some excitement for Jess and AJ as they had been eyeing up the cable car since arriving so we couldn’t leave without having a little trip on it. It was very worthwhile. The children loved the cable car and once at the top, there were additional surprises for them in store in the form of a playpark, woodland walks and a children’s railway to explore. A return trip back down again in the cable car completed our day and our short stay in Hungary.

Romania

We drove through the border at Oradea - through the crazy, rough and potholed winding and, house after house lined roads and through the night to reach Sighisoara (Dracula’s birth place), sleeping rough for the first time since leaving the UK. We saw campsites along the way but they looked little more than a patch of grass so we decided (also based on the time of night) on a nice quiet side street within Sighisoara itself. We had no problems except strange stares and giggles from passers-by the next morning. Sighisoara was a worthy stop and we woke to tranquil church bells, pretty buildings and cobbled streets. We spent the morning investigating the the bakery, a coffee house and discovering the many locals having an alcholic breakfast tipple while reading their newspapers. AJ lost his second wobbly tooth here and of course, the Romanian tooth fairy came this time round with some Lei, visiting us in Bran this time (where Dracula’s castle is based) and where we are now currently located. Beforehand, we made a whistle stop tour of Brasov and Rasnov before finally settling on a campsite called Vampire Camping and it has been the perfect base for us. Facilities are very clean and the owners are very nice. We were provided the campsite details before we left the UK by Paul White who lives in Romania and we would highly recommend this campsite to others. It is a great base in our view. We have seen any amount of sheep, cows, stray dogs, horses and carts, chickens, hens and more than our fair share of bad roads and pavements since we have been here but we love it and are looking forward to seeing and experiencing more. We think the Transfagaaran Highway is shut currently for another week or so and that the road might be collapsed at it’s entry point currently but we’re not completely sure as yet.

Education

Both - Jessica and AJ’s word of the week has been: ‘Anomometer’ - a device we built together and had to buy a 9V battery for while in Austria to help us learn about and measure wind speed. During tests, the wind speed measured less than 1mph (no lights out of 3 flashing) while Jessica and AJ’s breath showed a wind speed of over 18mph (all three lights flashing) when blowing on the device as hard as they could. Science in discussion form i.e. looking at life processes (movement, reproduction, nutrition and growth) and how to tell if something is made of cells or particles and the differences between these i.e. whether dead, alive or, never lived. We used the tulip (see last blog update) as an example for plant life. Drawing a picture of the Land Rover each. Both spent some time sticking tickets, postcards and momentos they’ve collected into journals. Both Jessica and AJ also wrote a rhyme each as follows….

Jessica’s:

Cat’s Pay Back

I was sitting on my owner’s lap
But for some reason he wasn’t stroking my back
And I thought Pay Back!
But what can I do?
I know!
I’ll hit him on the head with a baseball bat!
That will get him back for that
On the count of 3, O.K?
1….., 2……………., 3………………..,
WHACK!!!!

AJ’s:

Whack the Bee!

A dog was sitting in a tree
He got stung by a bee
and then the owner came and said
“I say!”
And saw that he was sitting in a tree
And said “I know, I’ll whack the bee!”

Jessica - finished reading Anne Frank’s autobiography (8+ years version) as much as she could and more than enough for her to understand. A book called The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas which we brought with us from the UK was too hard going for her so we read and relayed passages during drive times in the car including the very sad ending to the story. Handwriting practice and Journal writing. Writing days of the week into Danish and German and looking at the differences and also the similarities between each language. Reading another book called ‘Your a Bad man Mr Gum’ from start to finish - Jessica couldn’t put this book down - over 200 pages - and thought it was really funny - she giggled all night, relaying passages and still talks about how good the book is even now. Found it difficult to get another book as good as this to interest her from our stocks but Jessica finally settled on The Boy in the Dress by David Walliams - so far she says it’s a little bit sad. Times table (up to 12x) quiz. Learning square roots and the trick of knowing that 144 is the highest number in the traditional times table. Long subtraction and addition. Crosswords - which have been good as introducing Jessica to new words.

AJ - Handwriting practice. Lots of maths i.e. Matching sums (draw lines to match adding and subtracting sums). Adding and subtracting wordsearches (do sums and then find the written from in wordseaches). Recognising odd and even numbers (circle the odd and cross the even). Adding and subtracting crosswords (do sums and write answer in simple crossword grid). Adding and subtraction problems with written questions. Reading aloud practice with ‘Fantastic First Poems’ rhymes, Mr Bear’s Holiday and Kipper’s story collection as well as being read to. Spellings - e.g. adding last letters ‘ff’, ‘ll’ or ’ss’ to complete words and days of the week. AJ now awards himself his own reward stickers and Jessica gets involved in helping to mark and correct his work.

Just for Fun

Playparks as we find them. Playing football, dinosuar trumps, eye-spy, Toot and Otto (similar to Connect 4). Playing with Percy the dog. Searching for cats on campsite in Hungary. Chasing sheep on the campsite in Bran. DSLite games & Brain Training (Jessica now aged 56). Listening to the I-Pod and singing along to ‘We will, we will rock you’, ‘I want to break free’ and ‘Don’t stop me now!’. Playing Brain Box quiz game with maths and general knowledge questions. Playing Wee on the campsite in Bran with Bevhelee and generally chilling out and horsing around.

Mum and Dad:

Scrabble championships - first game in several years and Andrew (200 points) conceded to losing to Anne (300 points). On meeting up with Bevhelee (Beverley, Helen, Lee) for the first time by chance since leaving the UK - in Bran, Romania, the scrabble championships continued - currently boys (team name: Them) against girls (team name: Us) and of course the girls won! 285 points to 204 and again in a rematch 299 to 284. Girls are so much cleverer than boys! NehNehNeh NAHNAH!

OK - so the lads won one game (Them: 290 Us: 284)!

Tips we’ve learned along the way

Giving the children a little pocket money to spend themselves on whatever they like as a special treat - good for learning about different currencies
Marks & Spencer tinned Irish Stew is delicious, especially good with jacket potatoes, rice and a bit of salad.
Austrian campsites are the most expensive we’ve come across so far. Hungary even moreso (near Budapest in any case). Romania is very cheap. Vignettes are required in all 3 of these countries.
A good stock of long life milk, Weetabix, cereal, cheese, coffee etc. - the things we use the most proving indispensible as we then don’t have to think about replenishing too quickly (powdered milk excellent too and much lighter to carry) - though all so far, everything has been easily available to buy except normal every day tea bags.
On the education front (though we have lots to report on varying materials we are using at a later date) while we remember - Tesco ‘Learn Together’ books are cheap, small, lightweight and, well laid out and excellent for aged 5-6+ years (KS1-2) - helps develop key skills for maths and spellings - with varied exercises and reward stickers - highly recommend for little people of AJ’s age group!
The Coleman’s dual fuel stove and the Cobb proving excellent for our cooking needs (storm kettle has been good too!). The Cobb is best used fully - as coals last for ages e.g. if you can cook a late breakfast, then onto baked potatoes and leave them cook for dinner later. Then, top up coals put on bread on afterwards for the next day’s stocks. The Cobb is very lightweight, portable and versatile - acting as a barbeque, moat for rice and all kinds of cooking - highly recommend. The Coleman’s is great as uses petrol which lasts for ages and is available everywhere - bring a spare jerry can to store stock of petrol.

Vehicles

No major issues - both Jessica and AJ say “a world record that we haven’t broken down yet!”.

Costs

To follow (or see last blog update for latest up-to-date info) - as busy working out our Forints from our Lei & Euros etc.

Next Stop Points

Onto Moldova for a couple of days. Returning to Romania, then heading for Bulgaria.

All the best for now!

Lots of love

A, A, J and AJ

Well done sorry we didnt meet before you left..manic with preperation and daffodill weekend. We have got back overlanding in Morrocco with 4 kids. Great fun but had an engine blew up in Spain so had to borrow anoither 11O and our son ran down a dune in the Sahara and suspected fractured Neck…Lots of advice over cell phones, transporting him on flat board with a snake about for 2 hrs then ambulance but xray cleared it.Only advice be a but more cautious than at home as the prpspect of no medical help foccusses the minds of parents and kids alike when they want to be a bit mad!
Otherwise its a great way to travel, ours enjoyed trekking with mules in morrocco so any reason to stop driving and stay put worked well
    best of luck, Tim

All is well beack here, typical bank holiday weather, sun, rain, hail and wind. Had the Eaton Socon village fete on monday, cooked 300 burgers and 300 sausages, took me two days to get rid of the BBQ smell, but at least we raised a bit of money. Miss you all lots, take care.
