Battle Begins! - Children’s Schooling versus Travel

Thursday, July 3rd, 2008

Our children actually ‘run’ into school every day - they love school so much they can’t wait to get there and are always full of experiences and stories about their day. It is an amazing thing to witness and a great start each morning before dragging ourselves to work. Hometime is great also because we know the children will have something of interest they will want to share with us about their day.

When we lived in London - this couldn’t be further from the truth where we found the choice of school and the school experience was pretty poor in comparison, particularly for our eldest daughter. Needless to say a dreadful fear filled us when Jessica began nursery in London - along with the dreary realisation that nothing had changed but in fact worsened somewhat.  The incidental move to Cambridgeshire almost 4 years ago has become a Godsend in terms of schooling as a result

Now happily ensconsed 4-years on in Cambridgeshire, Jessica and AJ’s school is perfect in our view and akin to what we’d expect from a private education in terms of quality, expectations and standards and children who are happy and want to strive and thrive to achieve their dreams - we couldn’t put a price on it.

Needless to say - the schooling standard is so high it has become a worry and concern - the ‘what if’s’ are creeping in about taking the children out to travel long-term and the risks etc.

On discussiing however, we remain resolute about travel as the children are going to gain valauble ‘life skills’ which cannot be gained in the confines of a classroom along with an appreciation of having experienced many things ‘close-up’ that will become more tangible in their minds.

Meantime, we are still having to convince ourselves when looking at the schooling piece in more detail. Why is it that after 20 years of dreaming, the kids have to be going to the best school in the world in our view all of a sudden? The situation is certainly magnifying itself as the travel dream becomes more and more a reality.
